It's Science!

mycoupons | 31 July, 2007 06:00

I admit it!   I'm a science buff.    Anything to do with science I love.... space exploration,  astronomy,  geology to weather.

In my school years I was an A student in my science classes,  including biology and chemistry.   Most girls would get squeamish in biology when it was time to dissect that worm or frog.   Not I.  I thought it was amazing to learn and understand the structure, function, growth, origin and evolution of plants, cells or animals.  I can still remember the excitement I had when I dissected my first frog in biology class.   To me, it was a prodigious experience,  to some others in class, it was disgusting,   resulting even in one boy having to go to the nurse's office.   Guess he had a weak stomach!  LOL

But my love for science didn't stop there,  it grew throughout my school days and continues to this day in my adulthood.

The Perseid Meteor Shower always occurs around my birthday,  which is Aug. 10th.    I can be found with my cup of coffee sitting outside in the dark in my chair, staring up at the sky to catch a glimpse.

Space exploration....  the most memorable day in my life is an evening back in Sept. 1997 at Kennedy Space Center, Florida when Atlantis was launched into the night sky.     Though I've watched many space launches on television this one was my first "live" launch and a night one being rare at that.    It is probably one of  the most awesome sights I've ever seen and will see.   It is a sight I will remember for the rest of my life and an experience like no other.

As you can see,  my excitement and love for science is real and a major science buff I truly am,  I'm addicted to Discovery channel.   I've tried to pass this love for science onto my children as well as many other things.

My youngest out of 3 children, has turned out to be as big of a science buff as I am.   He loves anything science.  I often buy science kits that the grammar school he attends, sells at the end of the school year for summer fun.    A few years ago we purchased for him his own telescope so he could view some of the wonderful world of space.    One of the online sites,  that I like to shop to pick up science kits for him is ScientificsOnline.com.

ScientificsOnline.com  proudly provides the latest and most unique science related items available. From unusual science activities to toys, gifts, and demonstrations, offering an intriguing collection of materials for the science teacher, enthusiast, and hobbyist.    Their Do-It-Yourself Kits have been a big hit with my son,  especially the  Mega Science Lab and the Ultimate Robot Kit.

If you have a science buff in your household you may want to stop by ScientificsOnline  yourself.       Use MyCoupons' unique coupon code MCSCIEDGE and get FREE Shipping on any purchase!  Now that's some scientific  savings!

Spud Growing...

mycoupons | 29 July, 2007 06:00

Our gardening question chosen this week was submitted by Tori S.  from Mass.  Here's her question:

Hello Annie,

I live in Mass.  A friend of mine told me, that she has heard of growing potatoes in a container.   I would love to grow potatoes in a container if I could, as I really don't have the space for them anywhere else.   Is this true and how would I go about doing this?

TY!
Tori S.

Hi there Tori!

Yes it's true,  you can indeed grow potatoes in a container.  I've been doing it successfully for the last 2 years.    There is nothing like the taste of fresh home-grown potatoes.   Of course,  with container growing potatoes you will not get a high yield,  but enough to enjoy for a few meals.

To grow potatoes in a container,  you need to purchase certified seed potatoes.   These can be found in your local nursery or garden center usually around January or February.   They also can purchased online at sites such as Burpee.com,  Gardeners.com or JohnnySeeds.com.   Make sure the seed potatoes you purchase at a local nursery or garden center have at least 3 to 4 "eyes".    You can try using potatoes that you bought from a grocery store that you have in the house, that do have eyes and either have started to sprout or have sprouted,  however they are not as disease resistant as seed potatoes and also many not do as well as certified seed.

Potatoes like cool weather,  so the general rule of thumb is to plant three to four weeks before your last expected frost date for your area, or to plant when the soil has warmed to 55 degrees.

Before planting you need to get the seed potatoes ready by placing them in a warm spot and letting them sprout.    The smaller seed potatoes may be planted as whole, and the larger potatoes should be cut into two or three pieces and set them aside to cure for a couple of days.  Each piece of seed potato must contain at least one eye or sprout.   Once the sprouts are about one inch long, you can transplant them into their main containers.

For a container,  you can use a 10 or 15 gallon container such as a plastic trash can or use a whiskey barrel or a large plastic storage bin that you can find in stores such as Wal-Mart.

Next you want to drill several holes around 1/2 inch in the bottom and a few in the side, about half-inch up from the bottom of the container.

Now fill your container with a mixture of half soil and half compost or  use a good potting soil and add about one shovel-full of peat moss that's been moistened to each 1 cubic foot bag of potting soil you use and mix very well.  To this mixture add a timed-release fertilizer such as Osmocote granules.  Follow instructions on the fertilizer box and mix into your soil mixture.    There should be about six inches of soil to the bottom.   Now  plant a layer of seed potatoes – five or six.  Cover with an additional inch or so of soil and firm the surface and water.

Be sure to water the potato container two or three times a week during the entire growing period.

When the potatoes vines have reached  4 - 5 inches, cover all but the top 1 inch (three-quarters of the stems) with compost or straw,  if you don't have compost then straw.   Repeat this again every time the vine grows another 4- 5 inches.   It is wise to insert a few wood stakes so you can tie the vines to the stake so they don't break.

You can begin to harvest the potatoes about 10 - 14 days after your potato vines bloom.   Harvest them by just reaching down and picking up the potatoes.   These are new potatoes and must be used soon as you have harvested them.   You can also choose to just let the potatoes grow until the tops have yellowed and died down.   These potatoes will have reached full size and can be stored as long as you store in a cool and dark place,  these are storage potatoes.

I grow Yukon gold variety in my potato containers,  but the Superior variety is another excellent one for container growing and if you love red skinned,  then try Norland variety.

Good Luck and keep on gardening!

Annie~

It's In The Soda...

mycoupons | 26 July, 2007 06:00

 Club Soda that is!

There it is on the grocery store shelves!  Found right in the soda pop aisle smack dab next to seltzer water.    It has a taste that I can't describe except that I like it .   It's a taste and drink that I've enjoyed since my childhood days.

I guess my liking of it came about  from when I was a very young child.  I would see all the women (my Mom,  her 5 sisters and  my Nana) ,  yakking up a storm with a tall glass of club soda with ice in their hands and letting me taking sips from their glasses.    They were something else.   They never ever ran out of things to talk about and went through bottles of club soda,  like going through diapers with a baby.   LOL!

Now, I drink not just plain club soda,  but fruity club soda too.   I add fruit juice to my glass to create sort of a spritzer with lots of ice to cool me down after a hot summer day in the garden.

However,  Club Soda is a strange concoction with some extraordinary uses.  It is not necessarily for drinking as is, or using it as mixer in some alcoholic drink.   There are many other uses for Club Soda.    Here are just a few:

Clean Your Sparkling Gemstones:  Soak your diamonds, rubies, sapphires, or other gems in club soda to give them a bright shine.  Just put them in a glass full of club soda and let it soak overnight.

Like Fluffy Pancakes & Waffles?  Instead of the liquid called for in the recipe substitute it with Club Soda.

Grease Stain or Food Spills On Your Clothing?   No problem!  Just pour on a tad of Club Soda and scrub gently.  Then wash as normal.

Love Your Plants?  Your plants will love you with a watering of flat Club Soda.     Believe it or not, the minerals in Club Soda do a plant good.  You can use it on indoor or outdoor plants.   For the best results, water with the flat Club Soda about once a week.

ACCCK My Hair Turned Green!   If you have blond hair, sometimes your hair can turn green when there is too much chlorine in a swimming pool that you've gone swimming in.  Never fear,  Club Soda will clean your hair.   Just rinse it with Club Soda and it will turn it back to it's original color.

Cast Iron Pan Mess!  I love cooking in a cast iron pan,  but sometimes those pans can be hard to clean.   Well you make it easier on yourself.  Simply pour Club Soda in the pan while it's still warm and the soda will keep the stuff from sticking.

See, now you all know Club Soda is more than just that!

Keep on saving!

Annie~
