$40 BILLION?!
Now that I had finished weeding out all my gardens last week, yesterday I planted some new perennials I had purchased online. Every year I like to add a few new varieties to my garden, something to look forward to seeing next season. Personally, I LOVE perennials. You plant them once, and the next year they come up again on their own. However, perennials do need up-keep such as, dividing the plants, clumps or bulbs every other year or so.
My neighbors can't wait until it's dividing time for me. I always share the varieties I've divided up that season. This past season it was my Black-Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia), my Purple Coneflower (Echinacea), my daylilies, my Hibiscus and a few others. My next door neighbor Mrs.C, was excited to get the Hibiscus. She had been admiring that plant since the first year it bloomed LOL! I made her day this year! Now, she can't wait until next year when I divide my Siberian Iris.
If I have no takers for my divided perennials, I repot them and when my daughter holds her tag sales throughout the summer, I sell them for $1 to $3 apiece, depending on the variety. My Hydrangea for instance, I start new plants every year just by simply burying the lower branches that have foliage into the dirt. The next spring, as the Hydrangea bush starts to bud and open, so do the new young plants. I can start about 5-8 plants per bush. These, I can get $3 apiece for them. With my Rose of Sharon bush, at the end of their flowering cycle, I let some of the seed pods remain until they open, dropping their seed below. The new spring season brings new Rose of Sharon bushes. Since there is no real work in multiplying these, I ask $1 a piece for them. The pots I use to repot my plants are free. I get them from my local nursery, where they discard them. The soil I repot with, is black gold....soil from my composting pile. With the selling of these left over divided perennials, I have my "gardening" fund. I re-invest it, in new varieties of perennials and enjoy the beauty of watching my garden continuing to grow without really costing anything.
So with last year's tag sale gardening fund, this past week I went shopping for some new perennials. Would you like to see what I bought? Well here they are!
First I purchased a perennial named Heuchera- Coral Bells Palace Purple. I loved the dark purple foliage and thought it would be an awesome looking plant for one of my perennial beds. They grow to about 2 feet high and shoot out stalks of dainty white flowers in late spring and summer. They prefer part shade to full sun and can be grown in zones 3 - 9
I also bought, Gaillardia -Arizona Sun. I just loved the bright orange-red with a tinge of yellow blooms. This perennial prefers full sun and can be also be grown in zones 3 - 9
Here's another one I picked up since it was a great cutting flower too. Astrantia - major 'Ruby Cloud'. Prefers part shade to full sun and can be grown only in Zones 5 - 9
And finally Liatris -Blazing Star Kobold. Those 12-inch bloomspikes are a must have for my garden. This plant also likes part shade to full sun and is good for Growing Zones 3 - 10

I'm not quite done, I still have a little gardening fund left over, I'm thinking about getting these Metal Sunflowers to go with my other decorative accents in my garden. They are too cute!!
