Take The Bite Out With This!

mycoupons | 28 June, 2007 06:00

Last Saturday, my family and I had been invited over to a friend's house for a little cookout.     We had a great time!     We ate,  chatted and had a few laughs.

Our friends live in a beautiful home surrounded by woods, so by the time it started to get dark, the mosquitoes were out and ready to play.    I didn't realize that we would be staying as long as we did, so I did not bring any mosquito repellant.

My friend however, let me in on a secret I never ever heard before.... use fabric softener sheets.    I didn't think I had quite heard her right, so I asked "fabric softener sheets"?     She replied "Yes,  I've been using that instead of buying mosquito repellant spray lately".    She said a friend of her's had told her about it.    Well I said to myself, this couldn't possibly work,  but it did.   Imagine fabric softener sheets!

This made me think, what else can fabric softener sheets be used for.     Here's what I discovered plus my friend's tip she passed onto me.

To Repel mosquitoes:  Take the dryer sheet and rub your  legs,  arms and  face to repel mosquitoes.   Or,  tie a sheet of  fabric softener through a belt loop when outdoors.

Soap Scum on Shower Doors?  Clean with a dry sheet.   Wet the doors down and take an inexpensive dryer sheet and wipe straight down the wet glass,  then rinse.

Protect that Suitcase From Musty Smells:  Place an individual sheet of fabric softener sheet inside the empty luggage before storing.

Freshen The Car:  Place a sheet of fabric softener under the front seat.

Cat Hair on Your Chair:   Rubbing the area with a sheet of fabric softener will magnetically attract all the loose hairs.

Eliminate That Static Electricity From Blinds:  Wipe the blinds with a sheet of fabric softener to prevent dust from resettling.

Dirty Laundry Odors?  Place an individual sheet of fabric softener at the bottom of a laundry bag or hamper.

Smelly Dog?  When your  dog comes in wet from outside,   just rub your dog down with a dryer sheet

Keep on saving!

Another Spill....

mycoupons | 26 June, 2007 06:00

Yesterday,  I was talking to my friend Donna on the phone, and had asked her how a mutual friend of ours was doing.   That's when my friend Donna  told me about our mutual friend's son who is two, and his bit of spill that he had taken.  The little guy had falling down some stairs.  Stairs he shouldn't have been climbing.   But as all mothers,  we all know you can watch them so closely and it only takes one second,  one quick turn-around and it happens.   Thank goodness the boy wasn't hurt badly,  he just ended up with a couple of  small bruises but an awful scare to the little guy and the mom.

If I had a nickel for every time I told my children when they were very small,  "don't touch that, don't climb on that or  get down from there",  I would be one rich woman.   At times,  I thought I repeated it so much, that I wish I had a personal voice recorder to play just those phrases, to save my vocal cords.   LOL!   No matter how many times I repeated myself,  they still did it or tried to at least!   For this reason, it was very important to me to child-proof my home to the best of my ability.

This phone call from my friend Donna yesterday,  inspired me to write this blog today about child safety as a reminder to all,  of the importance of protecting our little ones.    Protecting them against harm within our own home or anywhere.    You may be watching your child as much as you think you possibly can, and you probably do... but it only takes that one single second of being distracted.    2-1/2 million children are injured or killed by hazards in the home each year.  So why not make sure you've got the best in child safety products.

There are many sites online that you can shop to find all of your child safety needs,  but here is a site that is dedicated to just that.....KidProteq.com.    They are the experts when it comes to providing the very best child safety products available and at the best prices.    Shop gates, door, bathroom, kitchen, feeding to travel safety items plus much more.  They even have a FREE Home Safety worksheet that you can download, to make sure you have everything you need for child-proofing.

If you decide to check KidProteq.com out,  they are currently offering two money saving offers.   Take 15% off your purchase with MyCoupons coupon code MCKID0507.   If you spend over $50,  you'll receive FREE Shipping too!    The other offer is receive one FREE KIDPROTEQ with all product orders over $50.00 using MyCoupons coupon code: MCKIDPROTEQNEW

See that, you can protect your kids and protect your wallet with savings at the same time!  LOL.

Keep on saving!

To Pick or Not To Pick....

mycoupons | 25 June, 2007 06:00

This week's gardening question was submitted by Trish W.  from New Jersey.  Here's her question:

Hi Annie,

I hope you can help me out with this.   I live in New Jersey and I decided to try growing cantaloupes this year in my garden .   How do I know that the cantaloupes are ripe and ready to pick?

Trish W.

 Hi Trish,

Great question!    I remember the first time I tried my hand out with cantaloupes and trying to determine when they were ready to pick.    The  general rule is, that a melon is ripe when the stem begins to dry out.

The best way to check  to see if the cantaloupes are ready to pick, is to place your thumb beside the stem and gently apply pressure to the side. If the stem separates easily, or when you press your thumb at the end of the melon and it's soft,  the melon is ripe and ready to pick.    However,  if the melon is soft all over, it's overripe.   As a guideline, cantaloupes usually ripen between  75 to 90 days (depending on the variety) after you've planted the seed.   The maturity date of a variety can be found on the seed packet.

You  can pick a melon just prior to ripening and it will ripen indoors, but it will not be as flavorful as if you had left it on the vine to fully ripen.

An important thing I've learned growing cantaloupes over the years, is to stop watering  when the fruits begin to ripen.    They will definitely develop better flavor if you avoid excessive watering, especially during the last week or two.    The exception to this would be, if you are suffering from a prolonged dry spell,  then you will want to water a little.

Another tip on growing cantaloupes, if you haven't done so already,   is to be sure to slide a board or a wood slat  under each of  the melons when they are about half-grown.   This prevents it from rotting.    I  learned this the hard way, after my first season of growing them.   If the ground is full of moisture from an over abundant amount of rain and you do not do this,  you have a chance of some of them rotting.

One more trick,  when you know your growing season for cantaloupe is coming to an end,  make sure you pinch the smaller fruits off the stem, as well as all the growing points on the vine.    This will encourage the larger fruits left on the vine, to ripen.

Thanks again for the great question Trish!

Keep on gardening!

Tangy Kabobs!

mycoupons | 23 June, 2007 06:00

This week 's recipe was submitted by Angie M.  from WI.    She wrote:

Hi there Annie,

I enjoy your recipe blog and thought maybe I could share one of my family's favorite recipes.  It's called Tangy Kabobs and my family and I really love it.   I hope you choose my recipe,  I would love to see it on your Sat. blog so that I can share it with everyone.  It is really good and a great recipe for the grill.    The recipe serves 4, but  you can double up the ingredients.   Also we prefer sirloin but you can substitute it with round or tenderloin.   They all work great.

Thank you so much,
Angie M.

Hey Angie,

It's sound scrumptious!   Though in my household we eat alot of pasta, chicken and fish,  we do enjoy beef at least once of week.   I will be surely trying this one out.    Thank you!

Here's Angie's Tangy Kabobs recipe....

1 pound of sirloin steak, cut into 1 inch cubes
2 TBSPS of Olive Oil
1 TBSP lemon juice
1 TBSP water
1/4 Tsp.  black pepper
1 Tsp. dried oregano
2 Tsp. dijon style mustard
8 large mushrooms
3 med. bell peppers,  remove seeds and cut into 1 inch pieces

Preheat the grill.   In a large bowl,  whisk together the oil,  lemon juice, mustard, water,  black pepper and oregano.   Add the beef cubes, pepper pieces and mushroom into the bowl and toss to coat well.

On four 12-inch skewers alternate pieces of the beef, pepper and mushrooms.    Place kabobs on preheated grill and grill over medium heat for about 8 to 10 minutes.

Thanks again Angie!

Keep on cooking!

Annie~
