More Than A Laundry Booster!

mycoupons | 31 May, 2007 06:00

For a the longest time,  I had thought borax was just used as a laundry booster and water softener.  Giving that extra boost for the cleanest clothes.   That is what my Mom used it for and I never did see her use it for anything else.   But I've found out differently.  Borax or sodium borate can be used as multi-purpose household cleaner  throughout your house.

Here are some household uses for Borax:

Wall and Floor Cleaner:  In a bucket fill with 1 gallon of warm water.   Add 1/3 cup of Borax,  1 tsp. dishwashing liquid and 1 tsp. ammonia.

Scouring Powder for Tubs, Sinks and Toilets:   In a container, mix  1/4 cup Borax. 1/4 cup baking soda and 1-1/2 cups of hot water.  Mix thoroughly

Eliminate Rust Stains in the Bathtub:  Make a  paste from Borax and lemon juice then scrub the stains away.

Reduce Water Spotting. Add 1 tablespoon of Borax to your dishwasher to reduce spotting on your glasses and dishes.

Pet Urine & Sour Spilled Milk Odors:  Neutralize them with Borax. Simply dampen the spot,  sprinkle and rub in Borax, let dry, then vacuum clean.

Flea Killer:  Sprinkle some borax on your pet's bed,  your carpets or  other areas where you think that fleas are hatching.

Everyone Loves To Win!

mycoupons | 30 May, 2007 06:00

I love sweepstakes and contests.   Anything at a chance to win a prize.  Though I've never really won anything,  except maybe for a stuffed doll or two playing the clown game at the carnival.  You know, the one where you shoot a water pistol and you have to aim it at the clown's mouth to be the first to blow up the balloon on it's head.  Oh and maybe $2 once on a scratch off ticket.  I have a better chance of getting hit by lightning then I do at winning a prize, especially the lottery.  Believe me,  2 times I've been in a house that was hit by lightning.   Now I just run and hide.  I  figure the saying is 3 strikes and then your out.  It's looking for me and I'm not waiting for the strike that takes me out!

Anyway,  I still try my chance at winning from time to time.  I often go over to the Sweepstakes and Contests forum on the MyCoupons Shopping Boards and see what the latest contests and sweeps are.   What,  you've never been to the Sweepstakes and Contest Board?   Oh well, you must stop by there and visit.  You'll find tons of posts of current and ongoing sweepstakes and contests.

The Sweepstakes & Contests board is lead by our own Community Leader WendyKay.   Community Leader WendyKay along with members find and post all the current sweepstakes and contests that are out there on the net.   You'll find chances to win grills,  shopping sprees,  trips, kitchen appliances to cash and more!   There is also a post entitled " "Dummies" Guide and TIPS to Sweepstakes and Contests"  to help those that are new at sweepstakes and contests.   Several members have won many prizes in the month of May such as stair-steppers and DVDs entering the contests posted on the Sweepstakes and Contests board.

If you're feeling lucky,  why not stop on over and visit Community Leader WendyKay and the Sweepstakes and Contests Board for your chance to win!   You never know that next grand prize could be won by you!

My Search For A Knife Set!

mycoupons | 29 May, 2007 06:00

Over this past holiday weekend, with preparing and cooking for our Memorial Day bbq,  I discovered that some of my handy dandy kitchen knives are starting to go.   They must be at least 10 years old or more and the handles are starting to crack at the end of the blade.  I do have 2 better kitchen knives that my children gave me for my birthday two years ago, but my everyday ones are showing the wear and tear.   Not to mention about two weeks ago,  my dear thoughtful hubby decided to try sharpening my kitchen shears only to destroy them!  Got to love him still for trying!

So I began my online search for a new kitchen knife set.   I came upon an incredible coupon offer that I found in the MyCoupons code section for A Big Discount Warehouse.  The offer was for  an 11 Piece Deluxe Knife Set with coupon code savings of 75% off!   I decided to check this out.

The Invasion of the Blackberry Bush!

mycoupons | 28 May, 2007 06:00

I had purchased a Blackberry bush from Sam's Club about 2 years ago.  It came in a box that included the Blackberry bush,  a raspberry bush and 2 blueberry bushes and Sam's was offering it at a bargain.   I can't pass up a good bargain LOL.    I love fresh fruit and with the cost of these fruits in the stores, I thought it would be great to grow fresh berries and save.   Well was I wrong!!   Though the other plants have performed well,  the blackberry bush I believe is possessed.   It is the most invasive plant I've EVER dealt with.   It decides to grow and send runners that create new plants wherever it wants.

Yesterday,  since the heat and humidity broke, I decided to finish up weeding and planting in my garden.     As I was weeding, I noticed that there were baby Blackberry bush plants coming up all throughout my garden, including some in my flower beds that were 20 feet away!    That was the final straw.  I made like Clint Eastwood in an old western and instead of being equipped with a poncho and pistol,  I was equipped with a t-shirt,  spade and level bar.    I said to the bush "Go, ahead make my day"!    This was it for this bush.   I and it were at war,  the duel of the century.

I first started with my pruners, gingerly clipping away the tall and long branches it had spewed out.   I say gingerly, because the thorns on this plant could kill.  Well maybe not literally, but they certainly pack a plentiful punch of hurt when one sticks you.   This process took me about 1 hour  to be gone with all it's growth to where I whittled it done to barely it's stump.

Now it's time had come for sure!  I took my spade and I loosened up the soil around the "mother" plant.   I then reached for the level bar and said "Goodbye Blackberry Bush".   I poked that bar into the soil firmly and then proceeded to heave the root system out of the ground.   Heave one,  heave two,  heave three.

All of a sudden, my 3 children appeared as they had seen me from the kitchen window, and wondered what was Mom doing now.   They now are my cheering crowd and all together call out "Go Mom Go,  Go Mom Go"!   Heave 4 did it.  I won the battle, the Blackberry bush was now no longer!    My kids were cheering and my eldest, my daughter who is 25,  excitedly exclaimed "Wow Mom,  I can't believe you did it!   I could never have done that, I'm not that strong".

Boy, did I feel like Rocky Balboa in the first Rocky movie.  I could hear that song playing in my head!   I felt so triumphant, not just because I beat the nasty blackberry bush, but because my kids were awed by what I did, something they haven't been in quite awhile LOL.   I did something that they felt THEY couldn't do!!  Hahahahaha!

The lessons I learned from this:  I still am strong like bull.   Never plant a blackberry bush unless you read about the variety and it's growing ways.   After the fact,  I now realize that there are varieties that are thornless and less invasive that I could have planted, such as the Merton Thornless.

Oh well,  I think I've had enough with Blackberry bushes for the time being.

Keep on gardening!

Raspberry-Glazed Chicken!

mycoupons | 26 May, 2007 06:00

This weekend as everyone knows is Memorial Day Weekend.  It is the day that commemorates the members of the United States armed forces who were killed in war.  Many also view it as the official opening of BBQ parties and the welcome to the upcoming summer season.

I'm having a Memorial Day cookout this weekend with my family as well as some friends.   I'll be grilling the norm.... hamburgers,  hotdogs and several other things including Grilled Raspberry-Glazed Chicken --- Yummolicious!   There will be plenty of salads,  watermelon and of course a luscious Memorial Day Cake.

If you never tried Grilled Raspberry-Glazed Chicken it is out of this world!   A friend of mine had served this to dear hubby & I when we were at their bbq picnic last year.   The moment I tasted it ... well it was a must-have recipe!

Here is the recipe and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

1 TBSP of  Dijon mustard
1/2 cup of raspberry jam
6 boneless skinless chicken breasts halves (apprx. 1 3/4 pounds)
1-1/2 cps fresh or frozen (thawed and drained) raspberries

Brush your grill rack with oil.  Pre-heat grill.   In a small bowl mix the raspberry jam and Dijon mustard.  Cover the chicken with the mixture and grill over medium heat for about 20 - 25 minutes.  Brush occasionally with the jam mixture and turn once.  Cook until chicken is done.  Throw away remaining jam mixture.  Serve chicken topped with either the fresh or thawed raspberries.

Have a safe and Happy Memorial Day Weekend everyone!

Keep on cooking!
